I spent the weekend sewing.....

Front Wedding Quilt

I am enjoying this process now it is starting to look more like the front of a quilt I had pictured.

Craft group tonight I will be working on a cross stitch for a friend's baby who is just about due. I planned on completing the front of the Wedding quilt and starting on the back but I ran out of the thread and need to make another trip to spotlight which can wait till the end of the week.

Cute Skirt

I came across a gathered skirt tutorial and I just loved the style and of course how summery it looked!

After searching around I found my fabric at a second hand shop in town for just $4.99. I just love this print. The fabric is 100% cotton measures 1.8m x 3m (70'' x 118") and the looks to have never been washed.

close up of print

Here is the Gathered Skirt Tutorial  that I used for making the skirt. Was super easy to make!

Now I am just waiting for the weather to warm up to wear it!

Wedding Quilt progress

Craft night has been very productive the last few weeks. I now have 11 1/2 strips made (need 13 total) for the front of the quilt.

Over the weekend I was able to cut long strips of black homespun cotton 2'' wide to go in between the strips I have already made.

This is what I have started with. One row of blocks and then a black strip either side to give you an idea. The aim is to get most of the black strips sewn to the block strips this week.

Close up

I now need to decide on backing fabric and if I hand quilt or machine quilt.

Hope you are having a great week!

Its winter here at the moment. Only 5 degrees outside at 10.30am this morning with a high expected of 12 degrees. I enjoy a quiet morning inside before Kindy this afternoon, as doesn't require putting on winter clothes, jackets, hats, gloves with Master B and Master W complaining its cold!!

Following up on Mondays large aftershocks and the week of continuous  aftershocks found here at geonet. And we have now had over 3,000 aftershocks to date. This is a link to photos with comparison shots of some Christchurch city buildings from February 22nd and June 13th and its damage. Posted on Facebook this Morning a video link from a cctv camera at a local hardware store with footage from Mondays 6.3 magnitude aftershock. I can tell you personally that what you see in the video is exactly what most people, myself included felt on Monday afternoon.

Looking forward to a warmer less shaky weekend!

More shakes

We will be taking things day by day as we deal with the effects of more large aftershocks in Christchurch.

Yesterday (Monday 13th June) we had a 5.7 magnitude aftershock at 1pm and then a 6.3 aftershock at 2.20pm and many other smaller aftershocks throughout the afternoon/evening and these are set to continue for a while yet. This has brought more damage to the city after dealing with and getting through the 4th September 2010 and its 7.1 earthquake and then 22nd February 2011 6.3 aftershock and of course all the smaller aftershocks that were happening frequently. We are nearly at 3,000 aftershocks to date.

We are thankful that we never lost power and by Monday evening the water came back on and to be prepared we have had clean bottled water sitting in our kitchen waiting just in case. Any water for the time being from the tap is yet again on boil notice.

We only had a small amount of liquafaction come up in our section and no more major cracks inside or outside our home (as far as we can tell). Many areas that were affected in February have been hit hard again with damage to homes, roads, liquafaction and many without power in the city tonight. All our friends and family are safe.

Here is the link to all the recent quakes Geonet for anyone interested in the activity we have experienced in the past 24 hours.

The boys are doing well and they just talk about the shakes, and like to inform people there were earthquakes/shakes and of course each day has more why questions that will follow for us to answer.

Sun setting Monday evening
Since we are trying to keep things as normal as possible we went to the supermarket this morning, boys playing outside in the sunshine and night craft night will be on tonight. I am looking forward to sharing the evening with friends, sewing and sharing stories of our day yesterday.

Better go and set up the sewing machine and put my coffee in a travel cup (don't want to waste good coffee when the house is shaking)

My Sister's Birthday Quilt

My baby sister turned 15 earlier this year and I had decided I wanted to make her something she could keep for a lifetime. I made her a quilt.

The batting I use is 50% Cotton/ 50% Bamboo.

I made the quilt finished size 120cm wide and 212cm long ( 47 '' x 83.5 '')

After deciding on fabric that firstly were not babyish nor old lady, this is what I came up with.

Fabric selection

Then days spent cutting all the fabric into squares

Finally deciding on overall look. Then sewing it all together and machine binding.

Beginning a Wedding Quilt

Last year I came across this in my google reader Wedding Quilt and I just LOVED the idea of celebrating a wedding with not just pots/pans bakeware but a hand made quilt!

My brother is getting married December this year and I made a start on their Wedding Quilt

I had no real idea of where to start but I got a bargain on Trade Me where I came across a listing for off cut 2'' squares of black and white fabric. This is where I began. Making a few hundred 9  2''square blocks and the same size block of plain fabric. I am incorporating black and white while mixing her style, very pink and girly and my brother who works with diggers and trucks.

One block

Ironed stack of 3 block strips before they become a block

Blocks of fabric
Here is a photo of the strips (not yet ironed) I have made so far

I am in the process of sewing together more 13 blocks wide with 2 inch wide black strips between each block. Just 7 more to do.

Will keep you posted with progress photos. Would love to hear your thoughts :D

Tuesday Night Craft night

For the past few months on a Tuesday night at my house I have friends over to have craft night.

I am enjoying that everyone is generally doing something different like crochet, quilting, cross stitch, cutting fabric for wash cloths. Its a chance to learn something new and to be encouraged to keep working on something you have put down and not quite finished.

Last night I cut strips of Fabric for the Wedding Quilt

2'' x 5'' strips Black Homespun fabric

The next free night I have is going to be sewing more strips together

7 full strips sewn together, only 7 more to do!

Master W's birthday quilt

I have just finished making and machine binding, a birthday quit for Master W who turns 3 this July.

I found this wonderful fabric online Sew Pretty which was the inspiration for this quilt. I used the organic cotton range fat quarters planes/ trains/ cars and basic colours lime, red, orange.

The batting I use is 50% Cotton/ 50% Bamboo.

I made the quilt finished size 92cm wide and 140cm long (36'' x 55'') .

I have used basic bright colours and really love the lime green used around the blocks and the binding.

All finished and ready for Master W's birthday

I really hope Master W enjoys and loves this quilt as much as I do!
